How to Buy Evening Wear

Evening wear is judged in motion and in photographs, which is a harder test than a fitting room mirror. Fabric weight and internal construction do most of the work.

Decode the dress code

Black tie means a floor-length gown or a formal midi in a rich fabric. Cocktail sits at or just below the knee. Creative black tie permits a tailored tuxedo or an elevated jumpsuit. When an invitation is vague, the safest luxury answer is a column gown in a solid, deep colour.

Fabric decides the drape

Silk crepe skims and forgives; charmeuse clings and rewards immaculate underpinnings. Duchesse satin and mikado hold sculptural shapes. Velvet reads rich in winter light but adds visual weight. Test any fabric under bright light — cheap satin flashes, good satin glows.

Look inside the dress

Real evening wear is built: boned bodices, grosgrain waist stays, hand-finished hems and a full lining. These are the details that keep a strapless neckline in place through dinner and dancing.

Budget for tailoring

Buy for the shoulders and bust; everything else can be altered. Allow two fittings and set the hem wearing the exact shoes you plan to wear on the night.

Before You Buy

  • Match the gown to the stated dress code
  • Check for boning, waist stay and full lining
  • View the fabric under bright light
  • Hem in your final shoes
