How to Authenticate Luxury Goods
Counterfeits now copy the obvious. Authentication has moved to the details that are expensive to fake: stitch density, hardware weight and font geometry.
Stitching and symmetry
Authentic houses use consistent stitch counts in specific places — the same number of stitches across a handle tab on every unit of a model. Look for even angle, tight tension and no doubled-back threads. Asymmetry between left and right is a red flag.
Hardware and engraving
Genuine hardware is heavy, cold and finished evenly, with crisp, deep engraving that does not wear off. Zips should glide silently. Plated-over-zinc replicas feel light and warm quickly in the hand.
Serials, date codes and chips
Modern pieces increasingly carry embedded NFC chips or microchips readable by the house. Older pieces use heat-stamped date codes with distinctive fonts. Verify placement as much as content — fakes often get the number right and the location wrong.
Packaging and paperwork
Boxes, dust bags and cards are cheap to counterfeit and prove nothing on their own, but inconsistencies between them and the item are useful signals. When in doubt, pay for third-party authentication before the return window closes.
