How to Buy Luxury Fragrance

Fragrance is the most personal luxury purchase and the one most often bought blind. Concentration and skin chemistry decide the result far more than the bottle.

Concentration determines longevity

Extrait de parfum carries 20 to 40 percent perfume oil and lasts eight hours or more. Eau de parfum sits at 15 to 20 percent and is the everyday standard. Eau de toilette at 5 to 15 percent is lighter and better for heat. Cologne is the briefest of all.

Test on skin, over hours

Paper strips only show the top notes. Spray one fragrance on the wrist, leave the shop and revisit after four hours to meet the base — the woods, ambers and musks you will actually wear. Never test more than two at a time.

Understand the pyramid

Top notes such as citrus and aldehydes vanish in minutes. Heart notes — florals, spices — define the first hour. Base notes of oud, amber, vanilla and sandalwood are the signature. Buy the base, not the opening.

Store it correctly

Heat and light degrade perfume quickly. Keep bottles boxed, upright and away from bathrooms. A well-stored extrait remains excellent for years; the same bottle on a sunny shelf turns within months.

Before You Buy

  • Match concentration to how long you need it
  • Test on skin and wait four hours
  • Judge the base notes, not the opening
  • Store boxed, cool and out of light
