How to Buy Luxury Investment Pieces
Very few luxury goods appreciate. A far more useful goal is a low cost per wear and a high resale floor — and a handful of categories deliver both reliably.
Categories that hold value
Steel sports watches from the major Swiss houses, classic quilted and structured handbags in neutral leathers, high-carat gold jewelry, and signed fine jewelry hold value best. Ready-to-wear, with rare exceptions, does not.
Think in cost per wear
A 4,000 coat worn 200 times over five winters costs 20 a wear. A 600 seasonal dress worn twice costs 300. This single calculation reorders most wardrobe budgets and favours outerwear, bags and shoes over occasion pieces.
Buy classics, not statements
Neutral colours, restrained hardware and long-running house models resell fastest. Limited-edition prints and heavy logo treatments date quickly and lose value sharply once the season turns.
Keep the provenance
Boxes, dust bags, authenticity cards, receipts and service records can add 10 to 20 percent to resale value. Store them together from the day of purchase.
Before You Buy
- Concentrate spending on value-holding categories
- Calculate cost per wear before buying
- Choose house classics over seasonal statements
- Archive all provenance materials
