How to Buy a Luxury Silk Scarf
A great silk scarf is one of the few luxury pieces that flatters everyone and never dates. The quality markers are unusually easy to verify by hand.
Weight is measured in momme
Scarf silk typically runs 12 to 16 momme. Lighter than 12 and it feels flimsy and slips from the neck; heavier twill holds a knot beautifully and drapes with weight. Twill silk is the classic choice for large squares.
Check the hem
The single clearest quality marker is a hand-rolled hem — a soft, slightly plump edge rolled toward the printed side and stitched by hand. Machine-stitched flat hems indicate a lower tier, regardless of the print.
Judge the printing
Fine scarves use many screens, one per colour. Look for crisp registration where colours meet, with no haloing or bleed, and check that the design reads strongly on the reverse.
Size for purpose
A 90-centimetre square is the versatile classic: neck, bag handle or hair. A 70 works as a neckerchief; a 140 becomes a wrap. Long twillys are for bag handles and ponytails.
