How to Buy Luxury Sunglasses
Sunglasses are an eye-health purchase disguised as an accessory. Lens quality and fit deserve more attention than the temple logo.
Lenses first
Insist on 100 percent UVA and UVB protection — tint darkness alone is meaningless and a dark lens without UV filtering dilates the pupil and does harm. Polarised lenses cut glare from water and roads; mineral glass lenses offer the best optical clarity but add weight.
Frame materials
Block-cut Italian acetate is dense, warm to the touch and can be adjusted by heat; injection-moulded plastic feels light and hollow. Titanium is the premium metal — light, flexible and hypoallergenic.
Fit the face
The frame should be roughly as wide as the face, with the brow line following your own. Lenses should not touch lashes or cheeks, and temples should sit level without pinching behind the ear.
Care and service
Use the supplied case rather than the top of your head, clean only with a microfibre cloth, and have hinges and nose pads adjusted at the boutique — most houses do it free.
